Development Advisory Services
SMG offers Advisory Services to school Boards, Committees and groups responsible for the delivery of new campuses or capital works. If required, SMG can also serve as an independent external member of your project steering group, to provide external perspective and independent, well informed opinions when making project decisions.
As a board or committee adviser, we attend regular steering meetings as needed. We bring independent insights and alternatives and stimulate discussion to the table that may not occur with internal-only steering group participation. We guide you on your options for all aspects and phases of the development and provide you with options and alternatives, risk mitigation strategies, and most importantly, advice that is specific to your educational pedagogy and needs.
This independent participation strengthens your project governance in the same way that independent directors strengthen corporate governance, providing additional assurance to your senior leadership team and stakeholders who are counting on your project’s success.
The Role of Boards in A Development

All projects, no matter how small, must have a project manager, and whether this is an internal or external resource, they must be managed, approvals must be sourght and given and decisions made that directly effect the outcome of the Development. While a Project Managers role is to ensure that the building is built to specification and code, they do not have a vested interest in the project’s overall success.
Many schoosl unitlise their non-professional boardsto supervise their capital project works. This is of course frought with risk and exposes the board members to significant liability. Whoever manages the project, the board will be involved at various stages, such as approving the designs and payments for the project.

At the planning phase, the board is much more involved than the project management team. The balance gradually shifts towards the project manager during the implementation phase. By the completion phase, the project manager has the greater level of involvement.
